A habit that you wish you didn’t have
I am incapable of retelling a story succinctly. I always wind up dragging in all the little details and making it as long-winded as possible, just to tell the whole thing in the most drawn out way possible.
This never happens:
"How was work today?"It generally goes like this:
"Oh you know, pretty good. Had this one dumb phone call."
"Oh really? You okay? What happened?"
"Yeah, sweet as. Just some jerk-off who thought they could tell me how to do my job. I made myself a recovery cup of tea and moved on."
"Please let me get a drink in me first."
"What? Why? First before what?"
"Before you launch into one of your work stories."
"One of my what?? Hey now, that's not fair..."
"Really? Nothing to say?"
(I quiver with the strain of trying to hold back the flood of words.)
"Okay so there is this one thing that I HAVE TO tell you!! Because of this OTHER THING that is because of THAT STUFF from the other day!!"
(Tightens grip on chilled glass and prepares for enslaught.)
I'll save you the actual pain of sitting through a reenactment of one of my reenactments - but for someone who works as an editor professionally and personally prides herself on sparsely written poetry, man, I have some issues with running my mouth off.
This is probably why you are so good at being an editor... you have an outlet, namely, your gob :D
Aaaahhh yes, perhaps! Too much being strigent on written words, they all escape elsewhere!! ;P
